Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most magical moments — and capturing those first few days with beautiful, professional portraits is a gift you’ll treasure forever. Whether you’re a first-time parent or adding another little one to the family, newborn photography is about more than just pictures — it’s about preserving the tiny details and fleeting memories you’ll never get back.

As an experienced East Bay newborn photographer based in Oakley, I’ve spent years helping families from Concord, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Brentwood, and beyond document their baby’s earliest days. In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know: when to book, how to prepare, what to expect, and how to make the most of your newborn photo session.

🍼 Why Newborn Photography Matters

Newborns change almost daily — from their tiny curled fingers to the way they stretch and yawn. Professional photography captures these fleeting details in a way that iPhone photos simply can’t.

More than that, a newborn session gives you something priceless: time to pause, soak in the moment, and celebrate the start of your baby’s story. These portraits become heirlooms — treasured not only by you, but one day by your child and even their children.

📆 When to Book Your Newborn Session

The best time to book is before your baby arrives — ideally during your second trimester. Most photographers (myself included!) book up weeks or even months in advance, especially during busy seasons like fall and winter.

Once baby arrives, the ideal time for your session is between 5 and 14 days old. This window is the “sweet spot” when babies are sleepiest, curliest, and easiest to pose in those dreamy, womb-like positions.

If your baby is already a few weeks old, don’t worry — older newborns can still be photographed beautifully. Sessions with 3- to 6-week-old babies often feature more awake shots and expressions, which parents love too.

🧸 How to Prepare for Your Newborn Session

The idea of leaving the house with a newborn can feel overwhelming — I get it. That’s why I’ve designed my Oakley newborn photography studio to be as welcoming and stress-free as possible. Still, a little prep goes a long way. Here’s how to make the most of your experience:

1. Schedule Around Baby’s Natural Rhythm

Morning sessions are often best since babies tend to be sleepier. Try to keep them awake for a short time before your session so they’ll settle into deeper sleep once you arrive.

2. Feed Right Before the Session

A full belly usually means a happy, sleepy baby. Feeding at the studio right before we start is totally fine too — I plan time for that.

3. Dress Baby in a Simple Outfit

Choose something easy to remove without going over their head. Most of the time, babies are wrapped or photographed in minimal clothing.

4. Bring the Essentials

Extra diapers, wipes, a pacifier (even if baby doesn’t normally use one), and a backup outfit for yourself are all smart to have on hand.

📸 What Happens During a Newborn Session

A typical newborn session lasts about 2–3 hours, giving us plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and safely posing your little one without any rush.

Here’s a peek at the process:

✨ Step 1: Warming Up the Studio

Babies love warmth. I preheat the room to mimic the cozy environment they’re used to, which helps them relax and sleep.

✨ Step 2: Styled Setups

I’ll plan several styled setups based on the colors, tones, and styles you’ve chosen — from minimalist neutrals to soft pastels or rich, dramatic tones.

✨ Step 3: Posing with Safety First

Every pose is done slowly and carefully with baby’s comfort and safety in mind. I never force positions — instead, I follow baby’s cues.

✨ Step 4: Family & Sibling Shots

Many families love to include parents and siblings in the session. These images often become some of the most meaningful in the gallery.

💡 Why Professional Newborn Photography Is Worth It

It’s no secret that professional newborn photography is an investment — but it’s one that pays off every time you look at your images.

Beyond the technical skill and equipment, what you’re truly investing in is experience:

  • An experienced photographer who knows how to safely pose newborns.

  • A relaxing, supportive environment where you don’t have to worry about a thing.

  • Artfully styled, timeless images that become part of your family’s legacy.

DIY photos might seem tempting, but they rarely capture the detail, emotion, and artistry that a trained newborn photographer can. This is one moment you don’t want to leave to chance.

🗓️ When to Book (And Why You Shouldn’t Wait)

Most families book their newborn session during the second trimester, and dates often fill up weeks in advance. By booking early, you’ll:

  • Guarantee a spot during that ideal 5–14 day window

  • Have time to plan your session style and color palette

  • Receive pre-session prep resources for a smoother experience

If your baby has already arrived, reach out anyway — I do my best to accommodate last-minute sessions whenever possible.
