newborn Session Prep Guide

Newborn Session Guide for Oakley & East Bay Families

Bringing a new baby home is beautiful, emotional, and a little exhausting. My hope with this guide is to help you feel prepared before you walk into the studio. Newborn sessions at Sara Pope Photography are calm, baby-led, and designed around baby’s comfort. My Oakley studio serves families from Brentwood, Antioch, Discovery Bay, Walnut Creek, Danville, San Ramon, Pleasanton, Concord, and the East Bay.

When to Book Newborn Photos

The best time to book your newborn session is during pregnancy, usually in the second or early third trimester. You do not need to know your baby’s exact arrival date. Once you reserve your spot, reach out after baby arrives so we can choose the best session date.

Most newborn sessions are scheduled when baby is around 10 to 14 days old. This is often when babies are sleepy and easier to pose. If your baby is older, please do not panic. I still photograph newborns beyond that window, and we adjust the session to fit what your baby needs.

What to Bring

You do not need to pack the whole house. I keep wraps, blankets, headbands, bonnets, props, and newborn styling pieces at the studio. Bring pacifiers, extra diapers, wipes, bottles if you are bottle feeding, and anything baby may need.

If there is a sentimental item you would like photographed, such as a small heirloom blanket or special stuffed animal, bring it with you. We may not use every item, but I am always happy to look.

What Baby Should Wear

The easiest thing is to dress baby in a simple zip-up sleeper before you arrive. Try to avoid outfits that need to be pulled over baby’s head. Once you get to the studio, I will take care of wrapping and styling.

Many babies are photographed wrapped or in simple newborn pieces rather than traditional outfits. This keeps the focus on baby’s tiny details and helps them stay cozy.

Feeding and Soothing Breaks

Your session is not rushed. Newborns need breaks, and that is completely normal. We pause for feeding, diaper changes, cuddles, and soothing as often as needed.

A baby-led session means I follow your baby’s cues. If baby needs to eat, we stop. If baby needs to be held, we stop. If baby prefers being wrapped instead of posed, we adjust. The goal is beautiful portraits while keeping your baby safe.

Parent and Sibling Portraits

Parent and sibling portraits can be included during your newborn session. I recommend simple, soft, neutral clothing so the focus stays on connection and emotion. Cream, white, beige, soft gray, blush, muted blue, and earth tones photograph beautifully.

For siblings, I keep expectations gentle. Young children may need time, snacks, breaks, or patience. That is okay. I will guide them in a way that feels natural and safe.

Safety and Baby-Led Posing

Newborn safety is always the priority. I never force a baby into a pose. Some babies love being curled up, some prefer being wrapped, and some want their hands near their face. All of that is normal.

Many sweet images happen when we let baby lead. Your baby does not need to perform. They only need to be themselves.

What Happens After the Session

After your session, I will prepare your proofing gallery so you can choose your favorite images. Once your selections are confirmed, those chosen images are retouched and polished for final delivery.
