6 Questions to Ask Before Booking a Newborn Photographer

Choosing a newborn photographer can feel like one more thing to figure out before baby arrives.

You’re already making a hundred tiny decisions, preparing for a brand new person, and somewhere in the middle of all that, you’re supposed to choose the person who will photograph one of the most fleeting seasons of your life.

No pressure, right?

The truth is, newborn photography is about so much more than pretty pictures. Yes, beautiful images matter. But so does safety, experience, communication, pricing clarity, and feeling genuinely cared for during a very tender season of life.

If you’re expecting and starting to research newborn photos, here are six important questions to ask before booking a newborn photographer.

1. When should I actually book newborn photos?

The best time to reserve your newborn session is usually during pregnancy, often in the second or third trimester.

You do not need to know exactly when baby will arrive before reaching out. Most newborn photographers use your due date as a placeholder, then choose the official session date after baby is born.

Because babies arrive on their own timeline, newborn sessions should be scheduled with some flexibility in mind. Baby may arrive early, late, or need a little extra time before their session.

The biggest benefit of booking early is simple: you’ll have one less thing to figure out once baby is here.

And trust me, future-you will appreciate that.

2. How will you keep my baby safe?

This is one of the most important questions you can ask.

Newborn photography is different from other types of portrait photography because your photographer is not just taking pictures. They are also handling, soothing, wrapping, and posing your brand new baby.

Before booking, ask things like:

How much experience do you have photographing newborns?
Have you taken newborn posing or safety courses?
Do you use an assistant or spotter during posed setups?
How do you handle poses that require extra support?
What happens if baby does not settle into a pose?

A beautiful image should never come before your baby’s comfort or safety.

An experienced newborn photographer should work slowly, watch baby’s cues, and never force a pose that is not working.

3. What if my baby is awake or fussy?

Almost every parent worries about this.

What if baby doesn’t sleep?
What if they cry?
What if they need to eat the whole time?
What if they only want to be held?

Here’s the honest answer: that is all normal.

Fussy babies are normal. Crying babies are normal. Awake babies are normal. Babies who need to pause, eat, snuggle, or settle are normal.

A newborn session should not require your baby to “perform.”

The best newborn sessions are baby-led, which means the photographer follows baby’s cues instead of trying to force a perfect schedule. If baby needs to eat, you pause. If baby needs to be held, you pause. If baby is wide awake, those tiny expressions can be photographed too.

The goal is not to rush your baby.

The goal is to create a calm space where beautiful portraits can happen naturally.

4. What is included in the price?

Newborn photography pricing can vary a lot, so this is one of those questions you want answered clearly before booking.

Some photographers charge separately for the session, images, prints, or digital files. Others offer inclusive packages with a set number of final edited images.

Neither approach is wrong. You just want to know what you’re actually booking.

Before choosing a photographer, ask:

How many final edited images are included?
Do I choose my images, or does the photographer choose?
Are family or sibling portraits included?
Can I purchase additional images or upgrade later?
Do I have the right to print my images at a lab of my choosing?

Clear pricing matters because no one wants to feel surprised or confused after the session.

You should know what is included, what costs extra, and what options are available if you fall in love with more images than expected.

5. What should we wear?

This is one of the most common questions parents ask, and no, it is not silly.

What you wear can make a big difference in the overall feel of your gallery.

For newborn photos, simple usually photographs best. Think soft neutrals, gentle textures, comfortable pieces, and colors that feel classic instead of distracting.

You’ll also want to ask whether your photographer provides styling guidance before the session.

Questions to ask include:

Do you offer styling guidance?
What colors photograph best in your studio?
Do you provide newborn wraps or accessories?
Should parents and siblings dress in neutrals or coordinating colors?
Are there any patterns, colors, or clothing styles you recommend avoiding?

You should not have to buy a whole new wardrobe or overthink every detail. A good photographer will help guide you toward choices that photograph beautifully and feel like you.

6. What does the experience actually feel like?

This might be the question most parents do not think to ask.

But honestly? It matters more than people realize.

Newborn photography is not just about whether someone can take a pretty picture. It is also about how you feel while you’re there.

You are freshly postpartum. You may be tired, sore, emotional, overwhelmed, running on very little sleep, and still figuring out this brand new little person in your arms.

You deserve an experience that does not ask more of you.

Before booking, read reviews and pay attention to how previous clients describe the experience. Do they mention feeling guided? Comfortable? Cared for? Not rushed?

The session itself should feel calm, safe, and supportive. You should not feel like you have to apologize if baby needs to eat, be changed, be held, or take a little extra time.

Because one day, when you look back at your newborn portraits, I hope you remember more than what your baby looked like.

I hope you remember that, for a little while, you got to slow down and really take it all in.
