One of the questions parents ask most before their newborn session is:

“What should my older child wear?”

And honestly, sibling outfits can make a huge difference in creating timeless, cohesive newborn portraits.

The good news?

It doesn’t have to be complicated.

Keep It Simple And Timeless

When styling sibling outfits for newborn photos, I always recommend keeping things soft, neutral, and simple.

Some beautiful options include:

  • Cream
  • Beige
  • Soft browns
  • Light gray
  • Muted earth tones
  • Dusty blues
  • Soft sage
  • Warm neutrals

These tones photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on connection and emotion rather than distracting patterns or logos.

Avoid Large Graphics And Neon Colors

Bright neon colors, busy prints, large character graphics, and strong logos tend to pull attention away from the baby and can date photos more quickly over time.

Simple outfits almost always photograph best.

Texture Photographs Beautifully

Some of my favorite sibling outfits include subtle texture like:

  • Knits
  • Linen
  • Ribbed fabrics
  • Soft cotton
  • Layers
  • Simple dresses
  • Overalls

Texture adds visual interest without overwhelming the image.

Comfort Matters Too

Especially for toddlers 🙂

If a child feels uncomfortable, itchy, stiff, or restricted, it usually shows pretty quickly during the session.

I always recommend choosing outfits that still allow children to move comfortably and feel like themselves.

Bare Feet Usually Photograph Best

Whenever possible, I usually recommend barefoot siblings for studio newborn sessions.

It helps create a softer, more timeless look and keeps the focus on connection.

What About Parents?

I recommend coordinating rather than perfectly matching.

Soft neutrals and earthy tones tend to photograph beautifully together without feeling overly formal or forced.

Once booked, I’m always happy to help guide outfit selections if clients feel unsure.

The Goal Isn’t Perfection

Honestly, some of the sweetest sibling moments happen in between poses.

Tiny hugs. Giggles. Curiosity. A toddler trying to sneak kisses onto baby’s forehead.

Those authentic moments matter so much more than perfectly coordinated outfits.
