One of the most common questions I receive from expecting parents is:

“When should I book my newborn session?”

And honestly, earlier than most people think 🙂

The best time to reserve your newborn session is typically during your second trimester. Most families book between 20-34 weeks pregnant to make sure there’s space available around their due date.

Since babies rarely arrive exactly when expected, I reserve your due month first, then finalize your session date once baby arrives.

Why Are Newborn Photos Usually Taken So Early?

Newborn sessions are ideally photographed within the first 5-14 days after birth.

During this stage, babies are:

  • Sleepier
  • More naturally curled
  • Easier to gently pose
  • Less sensitive to movement
  • More likely to stay settled during transitions

This is the stage most associated with those cozy, sleepy newborn portraits parents often envision.

That being said, there is absolutely no “wrong” time to photograph your baby.

What If My Baby Arrives Early?

Please don’t worry.

I build flexibility into my schedule specifically because babies tend to make their own plans 🙂

Once your baby arrives, you simply send me a message and we’ll coordinate the final session date based on how everyone is doing.

What Happens During a Newborn Session?

My studio in Oakley, California is designed specifically for newborns and young families.

Sessions are calm, baby-led, and never rushed.

Most newborn sessions last between 2-4 hours depending on:

  • Feeding breaks
  • Diaper changes
  • Sibling participation
  • Baby’s comfort and needs

The studio is fully stocked with wraps, props, layers, bonnets, headbands, and accessories so parents can arrive knowing most things are already taken care of.

Many parents tell me afterward that the session felt much more relaxing than they expected.

Should I Wait Until Baby Is Born To Book?

I wouldn’t recommend waiting if possible.

Because I only take a limited number of newborn sessions each month, my calendar can fill quickly, especially during busy seasons.

Booking during pregnancy helps ensure availability around your due date.

What If I Forgot To Book?

It happens all the time.

New parent life is overwhelming, and many families simply lose track of time.

Even if your baby has already arrived, it’s still worth reaching out. If I have availability, I will always do my best to fit you in.

And beautiful portraits are still absolutely possible even with older newborns.
